Your nanny will be proud to know that Wyoming is known as the “Equality State” because of the rights women have always endured. Wyoming women were the first in the nation to vote, serve on juries and hold public offices. Wyoming was acquired by the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 and became a ranching center after the Union Pacific Railroad was established in 1868. Cheyenne is the capital and the largest city. This wealth of water ascending from Wyoming’s mountains counteracts the scarce rainfall by allowing Wyomingites to impound the rivers for irrigation, flood control and, in some cases, hydroelectric power. Tell your nanny about Wyoming's two stunning national parks! First, there is Grand Teton that embraces the most dramatic portion of the Teton Range and then Yellowstone, which fills the entire northwest corner of the state and was the world's first national park. Yellowstone's geysers and hot springs are known world wide, as is the incredible Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. The Wind River changes its name in the middle of the stream becoming the Big Horn River at a site at the north part of the Wind River Canyon. Let your nanny know that every year Native Americans embrace a traditional ceremony depicting the "Wedding of the Waters." Wyoming is also a major hunting and fishing place. The nation's largest herds of elk and antelope are here as well as deer, moose, and bear. And the rivers, lakes, and streams overflow with fish!
