Fun facts about West Virginia

Your nanny will enjoy West Virginia’s natural beauty and exceptional hunting, fishing, hiking, camping and skiing there. Virginia was part of Virginia itself until the area declined to endorse the ordinance of secession in 1861. West Virginia is the only state in the Union to have gained its sovereignty by proclamation of the President. Charleston is the capital and largest city. Nicknamed the “Mountain State,” West Virginia is very hilly and rugged. Let your nanny know that the state has many state parks, public hunting areas, and state forests; Monongahela National Forest and a portion of George Washington National Forest are in West Virginia. Mineral springs are all over the state, particularly at the resorts of Berkeley Springs and White Sulphur Springs. Other attractions your nanny might enjoy include Harpers Ferry National Historical Park and an assortment of mounds built by ancient peoples, especially Grave Creek Mound in Moundsville, one of the nations biggest. The New River Gorge Bridge near Fayetteville is the second highest and longest steel arch bridge in the United States. Be sure to go during Bridge Day in October. On this day, officials close the road and allow individuals to parachute and bungee cord jump 876 feet off the bridge! How daring is your nanny?
