Fun facts about South Dakota

Does your nanny know how South Dakota came to be? South Dakota was originally acquired in the Louisiana Purchase. The region became part of the Dakota Territory in 1861 and was split off from North Dakota when it was acknowledged in 1889 as the 40th state. Pierre is the capital and Sioux Falls the largest city. Harney Peak, at 7,242 above sea level, is the highest point in the United States east of the rockies. Your nanny might find it interesting to know that South Dakota is the home of the Dakota, Lakota and Nakota tribes, which together, make up the Sioux Nation. Among the state's attractions are Badlands National Park, which contains the world's richest Oligocene epoch fossil beds, Wind Cave national parks, Jewel Cave National Monument, and the famous massive carvings of the Mount Rushmore National Memorial with the faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln sculpted into the rock. Your nanny is sure to become awe inspired by The Flaming Fountain on South Dakota State Capitol Lake. It is fed by an artesian well with natural gas content so high that it can be lit. The fountain radiates continually as a memorial to all war veterans! It all started in 1892 in Mitchell, South Dakota. Be sure your nanny visits the Corn Palace, originally designed to spectacularly display the harvest of South Dakota's farmers with weave murals on the outerside of the building. These murals are made from bushels of corn, other grains and grasses such as wild oats, rye, straw, and wheat. Every year these murals are destroyed in anticipation of new ones for the upcoming year. The Corn Palace is not just a meeting place for the town folk but an enormous tourist attraction as well. A tremendously popular event is the Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo.
