No matter where you are in Quebec, try to get to the Winter Carnival in Quebec City at least one time during your nanny's stay. The two-week festival, which runs from the end of January through the first week of February is one of Quebec's world-famous attractions.
It's a chance to celebrate Quebec's cold winter in its most picturesque city, with competitions, contests, entertainment, food and nightlife. And the price is family-friendly.
A 2006 ticket cost only $10 and was good for the entire run of the festival.
Bring your Quebec nanny and the children into Quebec City to experience the Winter Carnival, which will give your Quebec nanny a chance to see how Canadians enjoy winter, rather than suffer through it.
If you're thinking of hiring a Quebec nanny, or if you already have a Quebec nanny, learn about services offered by the Canadian Coalition for In-Home Care.
The Canadian Coalition for In-Home Care is a 10-year-old non-profit for care givers, employers and agencies involved in the in-home care industry.
Services include support and guidance for employers and care givers, as well as legal advice and lobbying. If you have questions about the legal process of hiring and employing a nanny, this is the place to go for answers.
It's also a place where your nanny can find support, connecting with other care givers and nannies in the area.
Being able to drive is key to the success of your Quebec nanny's stay. If she can't drive, it means she can't pick the kids up after school, and ferry them to various lessons, sports games and appointments. It also limits her ability to get away and enjoy herself. So you need to make sure your Quebec nanny can legally drive while she is here. There are a few ways to do this. It's easiest if she has a valid driver's license from her home country and/or state or province.
The Quebec government will recognize your Quebec nanny's legal right to drive using her valid license. She just needs a signed contract proving she is working in Quebec for six months or longer. However, her home license must be valid during the entire time she wants to drive in Quebec. It is helpful, but not required, to have an International Driving Permit issued from your Quebec nanny's home state or country. If your Quebec nanny does not have a driver's license and wishes to obtain one in Quebec, she will need to go through all education and testing requirements, including a road test, before she can obtain a license.
Does your Quebec nanny speak French? If so, does she also speak English? Obviously, it's going to help a lot of your Quebec nanny is bilingual in a city where both languages are spoken daily.
There are a lot of options for Quebec families hiring nannies. You can try to hire someone who speaks both languages comfortably. Their knowledge and expertise can help your children learn as well.
But you will be looking at a lot of qualities in your new nanny, and language concerns should not limit your choices.
Consider hiring a language student seeking to learn French or English as a second language. She may want to immerse herself in a society where both languages are spoken fluently.
You also may want to invest in language classes for your Quebec nanny once she arrives. This could actually turn out to be a good investment in a number of ways: Not only will she have a chance to learn the native languages, but she'll also have an activity that gets her out of the house and into a classroom with others at a similar language level.
Your children will benefit as she practices verb transitions and practices with them.
Hiring your Quebec nanny has different requirements than hiring in the other Canadian provinces. This is because the application process is made jointly with Service Canada and the Quebec immigration ministry (ministere des relation avec les citoyens et de l'immigration).
Here's how it works: The employer obtains an application from Service Canada, completes it, and sends it to the Montreal Service Canada office. The employer also must complete a separate application for the Quebec government and send it to the local government employment office, along with a copy of the Service Canada application.
Once the documents are received, the two agencies will jointly review them and make a decision. If accepted, the worker must then apply by mail to Quebec for a Certificate of Acceptance. When the worker receives her CAQ, she must apply to the Canadian consulate or embassy for a visa application.
Once the application is filed and approved, your Quebec nanny will have the proper visa and papers to arrive in Quebec and begin work.
