Things to do with your nanny in Brooklyn, New York

Ok, so you think you know all the places your nanny should see in NY. There is the Brooklyn Zoo, or a walk through Prospect Park that includes the first Audubon center and Wollman skating rink. Oh, and of course the New York Aquarium. But what about the other places? Like visiting the steam generating building on Pratt Campus over in Clinton Hill? There you will find an operating Victorian DC electrical generating plant worthy of Jules Verne! Or the legendary tunnel built in 1844 under Atlantic Avenue, running from Court Street to the Waterfront. There are even tours given by Bob Diamond of the Brooklyn Trolley Museum. And while it is not the Brooklyn Bridge, the Carroll Street Bridge over the Gowanus Canal is quite unique in its own right. This wooden roadway bridge slides back on a diagonal to open! If your nanny is interested in aviation – visit the Floyd Bennett Field off of Flatbush Ave, before Marine Parkway, Bridge Hanger B. It is open to the public on Tuesdays, Thursday and Saturdays around 9 AM to 5 PM free of charge, but of course would love donations. Historic planes are being restored by ex-servicemen volunteering their time and efforts! Your nanny might be interested in Brighton Beach where there is an authentic Russian neighborhood right down to Cyrillic signs. However, make sure she doesn’t miss out on the infamous Coney Island, America's classic amusement park with the Deno Wonderwheel, the Cyclone roller coaster and many more attractions!

So your nanny is hungry and wants a night on the town. Try Monkey Town at 58 North 3rd St. The restaurant is divided into two parts. One is the back room, where patrons can take in a movie on immense wall screens while the front room is the dining area that offers a creative and imaginative menu. For instance, three fried meatballs spotted with cashews and dried apricots with a tint of lime. Brooklyn offers many Italian restaurants along with Chinese and Indian. Another one your nanny might enjoy if interested in the night life is the Montauk Club at Lincoln Place on 28 8th Avenue. It is a turn of the century private club inspired by a palace on Venice’s Grand Canal and often referred to as the Crown Jewel of Park Slope. Its gothic architecture frames the Victorian interior. You are encircled by carved Mahogany woodwork and beautiful stained glass windows on every tier. Events that members have opened to the public include talks by local authors and memorable jazz performances. Of course the bar is always crowded for a Yankees series against the Red Sox, with Boston fans there to make the time exciting and out of the ordinary!
