Fun facts about Mississippi

Your nanny was probably like the rest of us and learned how to spell this state from an early age. Who can forget the famous chant: “Mi-ssi-ssi-ppi.” But there’s so much more to this state than a catchy playground song. The Mississippi River is the largest in the United States and is nicknamed “Old Man River.” The state is noted for its duck and quail hunting. Along the Gulf Coast, a favorite fishing area, are several resort cities and part of Gulf Islands National Seashore. At the Old Spanish Fort Museum in Pascagoula your nanny will find the world’s largest shrimp on display. Historical sites in Mississippi include Vicksburg National Military Park, Brices Cross Roads National Battlefield Site, and Tupelo National. An Indian trail that began more than 8,000 years ago, Natchez Trace Parkway, extends from Natchez to just south of Nashville, Tennessee. Your nanny will feel honored to hear about Friendship Cemetery in Columbus, also known as “Where Flowers Healed a Nation,” where the ladies of Columbus decorated both Confederate and Union soldiers' graves with gorgeous bouquets and garlands of flowers on April 25, 1866. As a result of this compassionate gesture, Americans celebrate annually what has come to be called “Memorial Day!”
