Fun facts about Manitoba

It's important to prepare for the preliminary phone interview with the candidates to be your Manitoba nanny. Write down your questions in advance. The more planning you do the more comfortable and clear-headed you will be during the interview. Here are some guidelines to follow when interviewing prospective nannies:

  1. Don’t talk too much. It's seems simple enough. But a common mistake for parents is to do all the talking in the interview.
  2. Arrange a time that suits both you and the nanny candidate to talk. Don’t try to squeeze in the interview between office meetings. Don’t schedule the interview at a busy time in the evening, when your children are vying for your attention.
  3. Be a critical thinker, and adjust your questions as the interview progresses. But don't appear judgmental. You want the nanny candidate to feel at ease when responding to questions, so he or she can open up and be candid.
  4. Note the questions asked. They reveal what is on your future nanny's mind about her future job and employer.
  5. Get the nanny's views on child rearing before sharing your own. Like any job candidate, a prospective nanny wants to do well in the interview and may naturally try to give answers she senses you expect.
  6. Ask about her child-care experiences. Get anecdotes about her best and worst days caring for other people’s children.
  7. Ask about the type of family she hopes to work for. Do the nanny's expectations fit your family?
  8. Find out how she responds to typical situations with children. How does she handle a toddler who refuses to nap? How does she handle a baby who won't stop crying?

Be practical when hiring a Manitoba nanny. Make a list of the duties she will need to perform, and then make sure your nanny possesses the skills to do them. Don’t overlook your needs or make emotional decisions. For example, if no one in your house smokes, think twice about choosing a nanny who uses tobacco. Remember, the nanny you hire will be taking care of your children on a daily basis. Many nannies are live-in and become members of your household.

Here are some areas that may need special consideration when hiring a nanny:

  • Infant care. The best choice is a care giver with experience in taking care of babies. Newborns are demanding. They need to be fed several times a day and require a nanny who is mature enough to respond to their nonverbal needs.
  • After-school activities. Will your nanny need to drive your children to after-school swim meets and soccer games? If so, does she have a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record? If your nanny has her own car, make sure she has adequate insurance and a vehicle that will pass inspection.
  • English speaking. If English is her second language, make sure you are satisfied with her abilities to communicate with you and your children.

Once your Manitoba nanny discovers Assiniboine Forest, it is likely to be a top destination for her and the kids.

Assiniboine is one of Canada's largest urban parks -- offering miles of paths for jogging, skiing, cycling and walking. Your nanny and children are sure to spend hours here, whether visiting the zoo and gardens in the summer or cross-country skiing in the winter.

Manitoba residents are well aware of the 480 acres of forested land that comprises Assiniboine. But many people do not know of all the resources and activities it offers.

Keep this list handy for your nanny and children to use:

  • Assiniboine Forest: Bike, walk or jog along the looped paved trail that goes through forest and meadows to a pond. There also are a series of dirt trails covered with wood chips that connect with the main Sagimay Trail. They are great for mountain biking and cross-country skiing.
  • Assiniboine Park: Visit the conservatory, formal gardens, sculpture garden and pavilion. There also are picnic areas and hiking trails.
  • Assiniboine Park Zoo: Located in the park, the zoo has 325 animal species, including polar bears, cougars, pandas, tigers and monkeys.

Manitoba winters feel a lot warmer when your nanny and kids can find special activities to enjoy together.

  • The kids will love the winter light show at Canad Inns. Best of all, your Manitoba nanny can drive them to see the twinkling lights, and no one needs to brace the cold to leave the car. The drive-through Winter Wonderland Light Show features more than 100,000 lights as well as 18 animated themed areas. Some of the displays are three stories high.
  • Watching the Manitoba Moose play hockey while feasting on popcorn is another favorite winter pastime. Plus the Moose are hot. Last season, more than 380,000 fans cheered the team on to the North Division Championship.

Your Manitoba nanny is your children's care giver. She also is likely to be a tourist in your city and may even arrive from another country. Why not prepare a folder of popular tourist destinations that your nanny and the kids can visit? From museums to the Royal Canadian Mint, these outings will be educational and fun. Here are just some of the places your children and nanny can visit together:

  • Manitoba Museum: This is the province's largest attraction, and its nine galleries take visitors on a walking historical tour. Some of the popular features include a 17th century full-size replica ship and a re-creation of boomtown Winnipeg in the 1920s.
  • Manitoba Children's Museum: The museum provides interactive education, letting kids climb aboard a locomotive and visit a fairy land.
  • Fort Whyte Alive: The nature center features a herd of bison roaming 70 acres. There are hiking trails, floating boardwalks, tipis, and fishing and hiking.
  • Royal Canadian Mint: Canadian circulation coins are minted at this facility, which offers guided tours and a coin museum.
