Your nanny will be thrilled by Maine if he/she loves wooded areas. More than 80 percent of Maine is wooded with white pine, hemlock, spruce, fir and hardwoods. Due to the trees and wealth of water from surrounding lakes, Maine wildlife is abundant with moose, deer, black bear, and smaller animals. A must see for your nanny is historic Fort Knox! Granite from nearby Mount Waldo was used to erect it in 1844 to protect the Penobscot River Valley from British naval attack. A visit to Thorndike Village and the Bryant Stove Works and Museum will treat your nanny to displays of an eclectic collection of antique cast iron stoves, parlor heaters, roadsters and touring cars. There is also antique layer pianos, pipe organs and music boxes, calliopes, nickelodeons, and hurdy-gurdys as well. And don’t forget the popular New England symbol: the lighthouse. They are everywhere in Maine. There are several lighthouses for your nanny to explore along the Main coast, including Fort Point Lighthouse at Fort Point State Park in Stockton Springs and Grindle Point Lighthouse on Isleboro. Lighthouses bring to mind a simpler time when fishermen and poets settled on the land. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, often referred to as the most influential poet of his time, was born in Portland, Maine in 1807. Two of his most popular works are "The Courtship of Miles Standish" and "Hiawatha".
