Things to do with your nanny in Indianapolis, Indiana

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway was built on 328 acres of farmland five miles northwest of Indiana's capital city in the spring of 1909 to promote the new contraption called an automobile. But due to poor attendance the owners rethought their plans and decided on a single event for 1911. They dreamt of an event of enormous size offering a huge purse. On May 30 - Memorial Day - a grueling 500-Mile race paying $14,250 to win took place, enjoying instant success and attracting universal recognition…it made history that day as the inaugural Indianapolis 500. And so the excitement began! The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum is located five miles northwest of downtown Indianapolis on the grounds of the famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway and is recognized as one of the most visible museums in the world devoted to automobiles and auto racing. An air-conditioned snack shop and departure area for bus tours of the historic 2.5-mile oval is located near the museum's front doors. About one-third of the museum's estimated 250,000 annual visitors tour the museum during May, the month of the annual Indianapolis 500-Mile Race. So whether your nanny is going for the speed (call for tickets at 800-822-4639) or tour the museum (317- 492-6784)…. it will be an experience to remember!

Is your nanny into mountain bikes? Believe it or not, Indianapolis is full of them! The Central Canal Towpath, formerly the Indianapolis Water Company Canal, starts at Heslar Naval Armory, cuts a flat path past many notable Indy tourist sights such as the Indianapolis Museum of Art, Butler University, ending at Broad Ripple's Monon Trail. Cyclists can make a day of it by stopping in to do some sightseeing. River's Edge Trail is like and introductory 101 class to cycling! The trails route has no climbs and is a great location to introduce a friend to trail riding. The chances of crashing are slim, but the possibility of becoming addicted to the exhilaration of trail riding is immense. And then there is Town Run Trail Park which offers Indy cyclists the best singletrack around. The remainder of the trail has been adopted as a city park and is now protected from development. But it does offer few breaks, insistently winding through the wooded bottomland. The most exciting feature is the roller coaster, which is worth riding again and again and again!
