Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield is a 2,888-acre National Battlefield that preserves a Civil War battleground fought in 1864. There are actually three battlefield areas: the main site is located at Cheatham Hill (what was once commonly known as the Dead Angle), one in front of the Visitor Center and the last one off Burnt Hickory Road. The visitor center provides introductory information about the park and the battle. While walking some of the 17.3 miles of trails you will see historic earthworks, cannon emplacements and various signs explaining what took place. There are 3 monuments as well, representing states who fought here. View the 18-minute movie and tour the museum. Weekdays you can drive your car (or use the shuttle bus on weekends) to go to the mountaintop. Drive to the main battlefield of Cheatham Hill and then onto Kolb Farm where you can picnic in designated areas. If you're energetic - hike some of the 18 miles of interpretive trails, but be sure to bring your binoculars and/or so you can go bird watching. Like they say “Take only pictures and leave only footprints” Tell your nanny it is awe-inspiring!
