Fun facts about Delaware

Before your nanny gets excited over the fact that Delaware is sometimes called the “Diamond State,” le him/her know it’s because of the state’s size, not wealth! Delaware has only 1,982 square miles and a population of approximately 830,000. Delaware was admitted as the first of the original Thirteen Colonies in 1787. It was part of William Penn's Pennsylvania grant from 1682 until 1776. With the Delaware River and Bay along its entire eastern edge, there is no place in the state that is far from water Let your nanny know that today, there are about 500 descendants of the original Nanticoke Indians residing in Delaware and they celebrate their heritage each September with the Nanticoke Indian Pow Wow. In 1931, the nation's first scheduled steam railroad was heated up and sent on its way from New Castle. The most historic site in Frederica is the Barratt's Chapel. It is where the Methodist Church of America was organized in 1784. There is a traditional service for the first time Betsy Ross's famous flag was flown at the Battle of Cooch's Bridge. This historic site is located on Route 4 in the Newark Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library, six miles northwest of Wilmington, which also features one of the world's premium naturalistic gardens. Horseshoe crabs can be seen in large numbers up and down the Delaware shore in May. The little creatures can, and often do endure extreme temperatures and salinity. But here is one odd fact that nanny might be interested in: horseshoe crabs can also go for a year without eating and their structure has remained the same since the days of the dinosaur!
