Things to do with your nanny in Denver, Colorado

Did you and your nanny know that President George Washington appointed Philadelphian David Rittenhouse, a leading American scientist, as the first Director of the Mint? Rittenhouse produced the first circulating copper cents coins – about 11,178 of them that were delivered in March 1793. After that the Mint began issuing gold and silver coins as well. It is said that President Washington, who lived only a few blocks from the Mint, donated some of his own silver for first minting. Now who wouldn’t be fascinated learning all about that? Enjoy a tour of Denver's U.S. Mint, the largest producer of coins in the world and one of only two full-service mints in the nation that is produces between 14 and 20 billion coins each year. The Mint tours are free of charge and on the hour beginning at 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday (excluding federal holidays). Do stop at the gift shop located across the entrance. There you will find treasures like United States Mint coin sets, commemorative coins, numismatic collectables, books, games, and United States Mint souvenirs!

Is your nanny impressed by men in uniforms? The Denver Firefighters Museum is located in historic Denver Fire Station No. 1. The building was constructed in 1909 for Engine Company No. 1 and served as a working fire station until 1974. The building was designated a Local Landmark on February 11, 1974 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places on November 14, 1979. Today the Denver Firefighters Museum is open to the public six days a week year round. The museum houses an extensive archive of old photographs, documents, journals and news stories about early Denver and the development of firefighting technology. Many artifacts date from 1866, including hand-drawn schematics and two early-motorized vehicles. Too numerous to mention, except their feature item, which is their Denver Firefighters Cookbook “Burners Ablaze!” Admission: Adults $4.00 which is cheap for a fun and very interesting day!

Whether you visit Denver Botanic Gardens to settle down in the Japanese Garden, participate in a class, or listen to breezy, cool jazz on a hot summer night, your nanny will find that Denver Botanic Gardens is more than just a simple walk in the park. With more than 32,000 plants from such remote places as Australia, Africa and the Himalayas, There's something there to excite everyone! Hours are between September 16-April 30, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and during May 1-September 15, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday-Tuesday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday-Friday. Summer admission rates (May 1 through September 15) are $8.50 for adults while the winter admission rates (September 16 through April 30) will be $7.50 for adults – and if your nanny is truly inspired, urge her to go for the membership!
