The State Railroad Museum in Sacremento is a complex of historic facilities and unique attractions. You can journey on lavishly restored trains, view appealing exhibits and events that engage visitors in first hand the magic of railroading. All of this brings the history of railroading to life! Trains maneuver on a 40-minute, six-mile roundtrip route to the top of the Sacramento River levees. Once you have reached the end of the line, the authentic steam locomotive ""cuts off"" the passenger cars and ""runs around"" the train, coupling onto the other end for the trip back down. I
Interested in days gone by? A visit to The Leland Stanford Mansion will recreate the brilliance and grace of the Victorian era in California. Originally built in 1856 by a Gold Rush merchant, it was later purchased and remodeled (twice!). After a 14-year, $22 million restoration and rehabilitation, the Mansion is now open to the public as a museum. Not only is it a museum but it also serves as the state’s official reception center for leaders coming to California from around the world! In 1978 the State of California purchased the property for use as a state park. In May of 1987, the imposing structure was listed as a national historic landmark. This home is truly magnificent to behold! And by the way don’t forget to peak at the 19th-Century style gardens.
