Fun facts about British Columbia

Nannies, along with butlers and chauffeurs, used to be hired by the very rich. The rest of us only knew about them from the movies.

But with more women working out of the house, it is common to see live-in care givers and full-time baby sitters in middle-class homes. In addition, there are more agencies and organizations that screen and help place capable young women in homes that need nannies.

If this is the first time you have hired a nanny, it may help to read and learn about the experiences of other parents who employ full-time care givers for their children. Mothers especially may want to hear about the relationship of other women with the nannies who watch their children.

An insightful new book to pick up is "Searching for Mary Poppins: Women Write About the Intense Relationship Between Mothers and Nannies." The essays explore the issues and emotions mothers experience when they welcome a new nanny into their home.

Biking the campus at the University of British Columbia can be an easy afternoon adventure that offers exercise and a good excuse to get outdoors. It's also free.

The sprawling university is a 15-minute drive from Vancouver center and is surrounded by forested parks. Your nanny and kids can circle the 35,000-student campus. Many children do not realize how large a university is. Who knows? Maybe the bicycle ride will lead to conversations and questions about college.

Your nanny can point out the swimming pools, student union, law building, hospital and hockey rink. Popular for tourists is UBC's botanical garden and anthropology museum.

Give your nanny the tools and resources she needs to properly care for your children. If your British Columbia nanny is arriving from another country, understand that your rules and customs may be similar to hers -- but also vary. Help her settle into the routines of your household. Be flexible and helpful as she adjusts to her new surroundings.

  • Introduce her to friends and neighbors. Show her where to find household items and make sure she knows how to use appliances. If your nanny has a computer, make sure she can get online.
  • Give her a map of your community and information on the region. Drive your nanny to your children's school, the grocery shop and other destinations she will frequently visit in her duties.
  • Make sure your nanny has your office and cell phone numbers, as well as contact numbers for local police and fire departments.
  • Let your children's school know in writing that your nanny has permission to pick them up and take them to appointments.
  • Your nanny should have written schedules of your week and your spouse's week.
  • Provide your nanny with a log or journal that she can use to record the days and hours she works as well as expenses she incurs while taking care of the kids. She can also use the log to let you know how she spent the day with your baby, toddler or children.

Your nanny and children can find plenty to do in Vancouver's Chinatown, which rivals the size of San Francisco's Chinatown. Open-air markets sizzle in summertime on Keefer and Pender streets.

They also may want to:

  • Sample dim sum at one of the many small restaurants.
  • Visit Dr. Sun Yat-Sen's Classical Chinese Garden.
  • Tour the Chinese Cultural Centre Museum.
  • Browse the small shops and check out the Chinese herbalists.
  • Glimpse the huge Han Dynasty Bell in Shanghai Alley.

Science World is a must-see place for your British Columbia nanny and children. They will want to spend the afternoon or entire day at Science World in Vancouver, which makes learning fun and games for kids as well as adults. It is a hands-on experience that seeks to fascinate and inspire.

Science World offers permanent exhibits as well as special exhibits and events. Here are some highlights:

  • The Body Works Gallery lets kids discover their own individual strength and endurance.
  • The Eureka! Gallery reveals the world of light, sound, motion and water.
  • The Illusions Gallery distorts images and confounds your mind. Straight lines bend and black and white images suddenly have color.
  • The Kidspace Gallery is a learning playground for children under six that helps develop their motor skills.
  • Omnimax Theatre has a huge screen that shows 3D movies. Audiences feel like they are part of the adventure. They can unravel the mysteries of insects, journey through the human body, explore the deep sea, and discover how robots work.

It’s exciting to hire a British Columbia nanny to provide one-on-one care for your children in a busy household. Expect your nanny to give them the individual attention and nurturing they need on daily basis.

But also be realistic about duties. Any nanny's priority is your children’s care. A nanny is there to supervise, entertain, teach, and help clean up after them. She may do their laundry, prepare their meals and help organize their rooms.

It is likely to be too overwhelming for your nanny to tackle general housekeeping duties or clean up after you and your spouse. Be practical when planning her duties. Many nannies do not mind doing light household duties but their focus needs to be the children.

Family vacations suddenly seem more manageable and more fun when there is another adult on board to help watch the kids and organize activities for them.

Consider planning a family vacation that includes your British Columbia nanny. The province's natural diversity makes it easy for your family to plan an adventure close to home.

  • Consider guided birding tours for viewing spectacular species like Aise swallowtails, green herons and trumpeter swans.
  • Follow the Pacific gray whale migration along the British Columbia coast, which occurs twice yearly.
  • Join a guided expedition to the Fraser River, which teems with the world's largest salmon run.

Your nanny may want to explore the wonders of British Columbia in her free time. A positive vacation experience will make her a more productive employee when she returns to work.

Here are some of the spots she may want to visit:

  • Vancouver Island: With no bridges connecting it to the mainland, Vancouver Island offers a remote natural beauty that includes mountains, rain forests and beaches. The ferry ride alone is worth the visit.
  • Vancouver: If your nanny has not spent much time in BC's largest city, its restaurants, boutiques and culture beckon. This metropolitan area in the wilderness teems with parks, beaches and cycling destinations. A day spent roller-blading or shopping with new friends can be invigorating.
  • Queen Charlotte Islands: For true adventure, your nanny can head to northern BC. Sometimes referred to as Canada's Galapagos Islands, this chain of 150 islands is among the world's most breathtakingly wild places. With preparation, it can be an easy and affordable jaunt for her, and a trip she will always remember.

Your new nanny may expect to bring gifts to you and your family in British Columbia. It is a thoughtful gesture that you and your children will appreciate. But if your British Columbia nanny is arriving from the United States or another foreign country, advise her of Canadian laws.

An international nanny can bring gifts, duty free, if each gift is valued at $60 or less in Canadian dollars. Your nanny may have to pay duties and taxes, if the gift has a higher value. Visitors are also is prohibited from bringing tobacco and alcohol products as gifts.

Personal goods are exempt from duties and taxes as long as she declares them when entering the country. This includes clothing, stereos, cameras, tape recorders, personal computers and sporting equipment.

British Columbia's abundant ski areas offer a wholesome way for your nanny to meet other young adults in her free time and to experience the natural beauty of Canada.

You also may want to include your nanny when your family heads off for a weekend of skiing and snowboarding. With your nanny along, you and your spouse or partner can enjoy time away from the kids with the knowledge they are getting the care and supervision they need.

Here are some of BC's better ski areas to check out:

  • Whistler-Blackcomb;
  • Big White;
  • Fernie;
  • Sun Peaks;
  • Silver Star;
  • Kicking Horse;
  • Red Mountain.
