Fun facts about Alberta

A nanny is not just a sitter. She is like a family member, expected to nurture and bond with your child. So be willing to spend some time during the interview process to choose an Alberta nanny who is the "right fit" for you and your family.

Here are some basic guidelines to follow:

  1. Choose a nanny who shares your family's values. The more you and your nanny have in common, the more easily a strong relationship will develop. Perhaps you and your spouse are quiet and reserved, or may be you are outgoing and enjoy a noisy household. Find a care giver who complements your personalities.
  2. Look for a nanny who seems mature. Ask her how she would handle different situations with your children. Do her responses seem appropriate? Do they reflect your family's views on child rearing?
  3. Ask your nanny how she handles stress. Offer examples of situations, and gauge her responses. You want to find a candidate who is aware of her own emotions and can handle your children's emotions appropriately.
  4. Find out about your nanny's upbringing. How was discipline handled in her home? How does she resolve conflicts?
  5. Seek out a nanny who has an eager interest in child development. A lot of the young women motivated to be nannies look forward to the adventure of living in a new community and learning a new culture. But you also want to make sure she has a sincere interest in, and commitment to, caring for children.

You've made the decision to hire an Alberta nanny to care for your child or children. But the directory of available care givers is long, and the nannies all seem well-qualified.

With so many choices, how do you choose the right one? After all, your nanny will be like a member of your family and be caring for the most important people in your life -- your children.

  • Your first step should be to sit down with your spouse or partner and make a list of expectations. Imagine the qualities you want in your future nanny. These qualities will vary from family to family. Perhaps you want a nanny who has a lot of experience as a professional care giver. Or maybe it is important to hire a nanny who loves sports and athletics, since your children are involved in these activities.
  • Next make a list of her duties. Will she be cooking meals for the children each day? Do you expect her to put the kids to bed each night? Be specific as possible and be willing to share these expectations in your interview with her.
  • When you interview a prospective nanny, don't ask too many yes-and-no questions. Ask open-ended questions to elicit as much information as possible.

Purchase annual passes to the Calgary Zoo for your nanny and children. After a few visits, it more than pays for itself.

Chances are your nanny and kids will want to return to the zoo again and again, because they will not be able to enjoy all the attractions in one or two visits. In addition, the zoo offers special events, like Halloween activities for kids. Also, different animals are on display throughout the year.

  • With annual passes your nanny and children will have unlimited access to the zoo, where kids can see such exotic creatures as an African crested porcupine, or meet Foggy the hippo, the oldest resident at 41 years.
  • Both nanny and children will delight in the flora and fauna at the botanical garden and the prehistoric park will amaze them.
  • The playground itself is a popular destination for visitors with children. It features animal-themed slides, tunnels and mazes.

Encourage your nanny to get the kids outdoors this summer and sample Alberta's annual festivals.

Some of these fests make great family outings. They can be educational for the kids and introduce your nanny to the province's culture and charm. Here are some not-to-be-missed events:

  • Calgary International Children's Festival. The arts festival of theater, dance and music is the unofficial kickoff to summer for families and the young at heart. Held at the end of May before school is out, there are hundreds of events and activities, scheduled on weekdays, nights and weekends.
  • Calgary Greek Festival: Live music, dancing and food highlight this three-day festival in June.
  • Calgary Stampede: Ten days of activities in mid-July include rodeos, concerts, farm and livestock competitions, chuckwagon races and traditional Indian dances. The parade alone draws more than 350,000 spectators.
  • Calgary Dragon Boat Race Festival: Teams from Western Canada and the United States compete in August on the Glenmore Reservoir, across from scenic Heritage Park.
Dragon Boat Festival: Races are held on the Glenmore Reservoir at the dock in North Glenmore Park, across from scenic Heritage Park. The August event draws over 50,000 visitors and over 3,000 paddlers and volunteers.

Help your new nanny get organized by providing a folder of fun activities that include a list of museums, with hours and directions for getting there.

Your new nanny is sure to appreciate your thoughtfulness and enjoy discovering the history of the province. With more than 25 museums, Calgary offers exhibits and activities that engage children and adults. Just check the Internet for details and print out the information she will need. Here are some suggestions:

  • Aero Space Museum: Airplanes of all sizes and types, from bi-planes to military flyers.
  • Calgary Chinese Cultural Centre: This domed structure is a sight to behold, modeled after the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. With exhibitions and a large restaurant.
  • Fort Calgary Historic Park: Visitors step back in time at this 1875 fort, once occupied by the North West Mounted Police. Seasonal hours from May-October.
  • Glenbow Museum: Calgary's diverse history is highlighted in exhibits of Native culture, western settlements and early farming.
  • Heritage Park and Historical Village: Pioneer life on the prairie is recreated at Canada's largest historical village. Catch a ride on a steam train or paddle-wheeler.
  • Olympic Hall of Fame & Museum: There are interactive games at this inspirational museum, which pays tribute to Canada's winter Olympians.
  • Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology: Calgary's own version of Jurassic park, this musuem contains the world's largest collection of complete dinosaur skeletons.
