Your nanny may not know that Alaska, the 49th state, includes the Aleutian Islands and Alexander Archipelago. All of it was purchased from Russia in 1867 for $7,200,000, a little transaction that became known as “Seward's Folly” (for Secretary of State William H. Seward, who negotiated the purchase). That is, until of course gold was discovered there in the late 1800's! Your nanny will revel in the natural wonders awaiting him/her in Alaska, which has very cold winters and short, hot summers. In the Panhandle, the picturesque mountains and craggy fjord-indented coast are magnificent and only enhance the Malaspina glacier and endless blue ice in the Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. The Alaska Peninsula and the Aleutian Islands have high volumes of volcanoes, including Katmai National Park and Preserve which includes the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes (its last eruption was in 1912). Also, impress your nanny with this interesting fact: 17 of the 20 highest peaks in the United States are located in Alaska. Two more interesting tid bits about Alaska: it’s only a few miles away from Russia. And the native tongue is Central Yup’ik. So buy your nanny a language interpretation book! While about 10,000 residents of Alaska speak the main language Central Yup’ik, about 3,100 speak Inupiaq; 1,000 speak Siberian Yupik and only 500 speak Tlingit. And the least popular language is Eyak, spoken in the Cordova area. Only a few very lonely people speak that!
