I'm a nanny because:

Working as a nanny has been one of the most positive experiences of my life! I love children and the joy that they bring to everything. I thoroughly enjoy being a nanny, and it's something that I am really good at. I suppose I could work as a teacher or in a day care, but I like working for families.

My past childcare experience: I started babysitting when I was thirteen. I was a volunteer worker in the toddler nursery at my church for three years. During high school I spent my service learning class each year volunteering in a kindergarten class at a local elementary school. My senior year of high school I participated where I was a "student teacher" in a third grade classroom. I also worked for a year and a half as a Tour Guide doing tours for third grade classes Managing groups of 55 third-graders during session (when the senators and reps are there working) was quite an experience! I started started my first nanny job in March 2009. There were two children ages 2 and 5. My typical day included preparing meals, storytime, naps, and activities such as playing playdough, coloring, dancing, going to the pool, library, and playground, reading, games, etc. I also helped with take-home assignments when the five-year old was in pre-school. Through this family I met several other families that I babysat for. I moved to TX in 2009 and worked as a live-in nanny for a single mom and two girls ages 7 and 9. I did everything you would think of a stay-at-home mom doing including preparing meals, laundry, dishes, getting ready for school routine, transportation to school and activities, plan play dates, household shopping, help with homework, projects, and studying, arrange play dates, etc. Because I was with the girls so much, I realized that being a nanny goes beyond just basic care. I felt responsible for helping to shape the girls into responsible, intelligent, kind little people. I love the family I worked for and was be sad to leave, but I'm looking for something that is during the day so I can have more normal working hours. My live-in position gave me days free while the girls were at school, so I was able to work with two preemie twin boys for three months. This was basically a mother's helper position. The babies were very colicky and the mother just needed someone to help for a few hours a day so she could rest and take care of her needs. I take my nanny/babysitting jobs very seriously. I hate to see kids plopped in front of a TV or game system all day. I like to keep children busy with activies, especially arts and crafts! When I worked as a nanny I tried to plan ahead each week so the kids were learning sometime while we played. I am a HUGE book worm and I love to read with children and especially help them learn to read. In addition to my professional experience, I am constantly around babies and small kids. In my small group of friends there is a 6 yr old, a 5 yr old, a 20 month old, a 16 month old, and one on the way! I get to be "Aunt Kayleigh" and I love it. I also have two nephews, ages 6 and 2. Each one of them makes my world a happier place. :)

Additional Comments: I have my ServeSafe Certification which means I took a course on proper food preparation, safety, and sanitation. I also took several nutrition courses in college. I feel very comfortable preparing meals. * I do not consider myself bilingual, but I took three years of Spanish in high school and know basic words and phrases. * Discipline varies from household to household depending on the children's behavior and what the parents are comfortable with. I think it's very important that I present a united front with the parents as consistency is so important. I believe the most important parts of discipline are: 1) CLEAR rules, instructions, and expectations 2) CONSISTENCY, CONSISTENCY, CONSISTENCY and 3) a calm talk with the child post-punshment that explains what rule was broken, why breaking the rule is a problem, and what I expect of them in the future. I have also found that keeping children busy with activities takes preventative action against unacceptable behavior. * I used to work at a baby store and am familiar with everything from BPA-free bottles to strollers to formula.
