I'm a nanny because:

I am still a Nanny after all these years, because there is nothing I'd rather do than spend my day with children. I love getting to be the person who challenges a little kid to learn something new, the one who is blessed with hugs and kisses, and an admission from a 3yr old that I am thier "best friend in the whole world!" I wrote an essay once in college, titled, "A little Piece of Heaven," where I detailed those moments in life too often taken for granted, like having a baby fall asleep in your arms, or witnessing a toddler's first song, [each of these: an incredible blessing]... I love being around children, and though I've worked in a variety of service-oriented positions(from sales to food service), taking care of children is the kind of job I love enough that Monday morning is something I look forward to-and can't wait for, as there are always a million fun things to do with the kids, and not nearly enough time to accomplish them all!

My past childcare experience: I have over eighteen years of experience as a professional Nanny. By this point in my Nanny career I have worked with 3 day old newborn babies, on up to 12 year old pre-teens. I adore working with infants and toddlers, as it's so fun to get to help them learn, and watch the milestones in development, as they occur so quickly those first few years. I like to be very active with the children in my care, doing daily outings, going to the park, or swimming, to children's classes or museums and storytime. There are so many avenues to learning, and establishing comfortable schedules and routines, that I believe are integral to those first few years.

Additional Comments: I think the most important thing someone in my profession can offer to a child, is a safe, and fun learning environment. Safety is an was always my FIRST PRIORITY! Yes, there are other details that are also important, like providing structure consistent discipline, and even a fun, and engaging environment to stimulate learning. I read a book once that said at the end of each day parents should ask their children first, "What did you learn today?" and second, "What did you do for someone else, today?" When kids are safe, and well cared for, they are more thoughtful and considerate towards others. [Most people are, when their own needs are first met.] For me, it is consistently a pleasure to be in a teaching and nurturing environment. I am a huge fan of listening to children's clever observations, each with their own brand of humor, and a constant need to acquire still more information about the world around them. I love, even more, to take care of smart, challenging children who keep you on your toes with the testing of boundaries, and reasonable attempts to customize rules. =)
